"Planting Season" is growing at our neighbouring school, Heronbridge. The newsletter reports on an inventive approach.
Let me tell you how 1,000 children are going to be planting vegetables with a budget of only R2,500 for the whole school! Just imagine if 15 schools did this on Planting Season. That would be 15,000 families taking a step towards sustainability. If every school in South Africa did this... a new country would be born! Ironically, it's nothing special - that's how much it costs! It's just that people don't realise how easy and simple it is to get growing. Here's how Heron Bridge School is doing it: They are purchasing one pot, some soil and two seeds for every child (R2,500). Each grade, from 1-12 is getting seeds from a different variety of vegetable. They are having a competition to see who in each grade can grow the biggest plant. Along with the seeds comes a document that teaches the child about the indigenous species and how to grow it. And if that's not enough... Heron Bridge is really going to town. They are funding this by charging each student R10. That raises R10,000. The surplus is being spent on prizes for top growers in each grade... and... wait for it... a consultant to come in and plant a permaculture garden! She will teach volunteers from the school how to maintain it and grow it over time. Now THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is R10 worth spending. Please encourage any school you are connected with to do this. Let's get this country growing!!!!
