EMF - a strategic spatial planning instrument PDF Print E-mail

The province (Gauteng) has commissioned a strategic plan to guide planning in an area where great pressure for development exists. The Conservancy falls into about half of the study region, and the study is of great interest to the Conservancy.

The study was done in two phases. The first established what it already "on the ground", and the second asked the question "what is the desired state/" With both these phases now complete, the consulting firm prepared an Envrionmental Management Plan. A large part of this plan is the spatial data which defines zones for determiing how stringently development should be curtailed.

The map below has four zones - the pink colour denotes areas where no development should be possible, including riverine areas, ridges and declared nature conservation areas; the green areas are high priority areas for conservation and development will be highly curtailed; the orange areas allow for slightly less stringent development control, and finally yellow denotes zones where appropriate development will be considered.

Please note that the cadasral information - farm portions - is overlaid onto the map prepared by the consultant. Some room for error must be allowed though this will be in alignment detail only.

The management plan also has additional detail desribing what may or may not be considered as development in the various zones. The above is a simplification of the information.
